Canibus

Picture
Canibus (also known as Bis) is a Jamaican-American emcee credited with being one of the best lyrical rappers for his complex and incredibly sharp lyricism covering from scientific, conspiratorial, and esoteric topics.  While underground Hip Hop fans embraced Canibus' albums, the outside entertainment did not.  He developed his alter ego, Rip The Jacker, after realizing and suffering from the competition of the music industry that was unfair and that the competitive nature of the music was cut-throat from his initial major label albums.  A cult-like fan base emerged following his music career from the intense lyricism Canibus has executed.  Canibus is also notable for his “Poet Laurete” tracks (over 1,000 bars in single tracks) and his feuds with LL Cool J and Eminem.

BIO Canibus was born in Jamaica in 1974.  His father, Basil Williams, is a former Jamaican cricketer. The family moved frequently, living in The Bronx, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Miami, Buffalo, and Montreal due to his mother's career requiring constant relocation. Canibus stated that he was an introverted child growing up.  After completing high school in 1992, he spent a year working for AT&T and another year as a data analyst for the U.S. Department of Justice.  His interest in computers and the Internet led him to study computer science at DeKalb College in Atlanta.

He began rhyming in the mid-'90s and by 1995 formed a duo called T.H.E.M. (The Heralds of Extreme Metaphors) with Atlanta rapper Webb (now called C.I., also known as Central Intelligence). While he was with Webb, he took part in a legendary cypher with the Wu Tang Clan family in Buffalo, New York, which earned him respect from the rap veterans. In 1996, T.H.E.M. split and Canibus teamed with businessman Charles Suitt.

In 2002, Canibus signed up for the United States Army. In a 2005 interview, Canibus stated "I enlisted because I wanted to get away from the music.... I wanted to do something that gave me a separate definition from what I had done all through my teens and twenties. I was 28 when I enlisted". He was then seen smoking marijuana by his superiors and was subsequently discharged.

Canibus has appeared in 3 films: Bamboozled (2000), Beef 2 (2004), and The MC: Why We Do It (2004).

DISCOGRAPHY

Can-I-Bus (1998)
Label: Universal Records
Purchase

Picture
Canibus' debut album Can-I-Bus was released on September 8, 1998 through Universal Records. The album contains many socially concerned material. Some songs depicted the government, AIDS, and the modern-American homicide issues. While "Second Round K.O.", produced by Wyclef Jean, was a success, with the song and video featuring Wyclef and a cameo appearance by boxer Mike Tyson. Despite eventually being certified Gold, critics panned the album, criticizing both Canibus' subject matter and Wyclef's beats, most of which were considered inferior to both "Second Round K.O." and the artists' previous collaborations.  Tower Records referred to Canibus as "one of the most innovative new MCs in hip-hop. With CAN-I-BUS, the debut album, Canibus delivers more of the battle-rhyme lyrics that are his stock in trade. Still, he manages to cover new ground with conceptually strong cuts like 'I Honor U,' which is dedicated to his mother. With his lyrical skills, Canibus represents the elements that helped build rap music."

Because Wyclef produced the majority of the tracks, Williams blamed him for the general dissatisfaction with Can-I-Bus and cut ties with him, going as far as to diss Wyclef, most notably on the title track of his second album ("You mad at the last album? I apologize for it / Yo, I can't call it, motherfucking Wyclef spoiled it!"). Said album, 2000 B.C., was also released to mixed feelings and reviews – the latter once more focusing on the lack of topical variety and uninspired production – also suffering from very little promotion by Universal Records.

2000 B.C. (Before Can-I-Bus) (2000)
Label: Universal Records
Purchase

Picture
2000 B.C. (Before Can-I-Bus) is the second studio album by rapper Canibus, released on July 18, 2000 through Universal Records.

Considered to have been a significant improvement over his debut album, Can-I-Bus, 2000 B.C. featured multiple record producers and greater differentiation. On the title track, Canibus blames the commercial failure of his first album on the bland beats by Wyclef Jean, whom he severed ties with to team up with various producers, ranging from Ty Fyffe to Irv Gotti. Allegedly, rapper Eminem was to be featured on the track "Phuk U", but turned down the offer.

Universal Records was reportedly underwhelmed by sales of the second release, and the label's contract with Canibus was terminated following the release of 2000 B.C. The albums only charting single was "Mic-Nificent", which peaked at #23 on the Hot Rap Singles.

C True Hollywood Stories (2001)
Label: Archives Music
Purchase

Picture
C True Hollywood Stories is the third studio album by the rapper Canibus, released through Archives Music on November 6, 2001. The album is Canibus' first release on an independent record label (his first two albums, Can-I-Bus and 2000 B.C., were released on Universal Records). The album was named after the television show E! True Hollywood Story.

The album has various skits referring to Stan, which at this time in Canibus' career, was beefing with Eminem. The track "Stan Lives!" is a skit that begins seconds before Stan drives off the bridge in Eminem's Stan. “U Didn't Care” is a song from Stan's point of view.

Eminem's responses were somewhat subliminal on his next release, The Eminem Show. Near the end of "Square Dance", Eminem says

"Can-I-Bitch don't want no parts of me."

Eminem also uses an altered "'Round the Outside" rhyme on the Without Me :

"Two trailer park girls go 'round the outside, 'round the outside, 'round the outside."

Canibus used a similar line on Box Cutta' Blade Runna :

"Canibus is coming for ya’ll 'round the outside, 'round the outside, 'round the outside."

Eminem made a song and released via mixtape called "Can-I-Bitch"

In 2003, an unrelated internet mixtape entitled The 'E' True Hollywood Mixtape by Eminem, was released.

The Onion A.V. club reviewed his track "Draft Me" as follows: "Next-big-thing turned hip-hop footnote Canibus leaped into the post-9/11 xenophobic fray with the noxious macho fantasy "Draft Me." With sophisticated lyrics like "Draft me! I wanna fight for my country / Jump in a Humvee and murder those monkeys!" the song instantly hurled itself into a time capsule of kitsch. At least Canibus proved a man of his word: Denied the compulsory draft he so richly desired, he enrolled in the Army, only to be kicked out for smoking cannabis. How appropriate."

Mic Club:  The Curriculum (2002)
Label:  Mic Club Music, Babygrande Records (re-release 2005)
Purchase

Picture
Mic Club: The Curriculum is the fourth studio album by rapper Canibus, released on November 19, 2002 through Canibus' own label, Mic Club Music. It is generally recognized for its scholarly vocabulary and complex lyrics. Much of the production is handled by relatively unknown producers, some of them from Europe, though the album has been praised overall for its lyrics and beats with concept tracks and few songs with a chorus. It contains over 1,000 bars combined throughout the thirteen tracks, with only three choruses, "Behind Enemy Rhymes", "'C' Section", and "Liberal Arts".  The album was released on Mic Club Music, Canibus' own label, but failed to chart, selling relatively few copies.

A limited number of autographed albums were sold exclusively through Micclub.net when it premiered. There was also a rare random insert which could be redeemed for an autographed microphone by Canibus.

On November 22, 2005, Babygrande Records re-released the album for wider distribution.

Rip the Jacker (2003)
Label: Babygrande Records
Purchase

Picture
Rip the Jacker is the fifth studio album by rapper Canibus, released on July 22, 2003 through Babygrande Records and regarded as Canibus's best album. After producer Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind (of the group Jedi Mind Tricks) produced the track "Liberal Arts" from Canibus' fourth album Mic Club: The Curriculum (2002), Babygrande Records CEO Chuck Wilson raised the possibility of Stoupe producing an album. Before enlisting in the U.S. Army, Canibus recorded his vocals before any production, and then sent the a cappellas to Stoupe.  He claimed that he wrote the lyrics on a "stained dinner table in Hell's Kitchen".  In 2003, Canibus stated the album consisted of his most complex rhymes to date and it "describes our civilization through the eyes of a modern day lyricist/poet".  Due to his military obligations, he did not hear the songs in the final format until a week after the album's release when he purchased a copy at Best Buy.  Although he released future albums, Rip the Jacker was intended to be his last.  As a concept album, the record represents the third "personality" of the rapper: "Prof. Emeritus Rip The Jacker", the others being "Dr. PhD Canibus" and "Germaine Williams" (his real name).  Canibus explained the alter-egos:

“Germaine created Canibus and Canibus had to deal with things in the industry that he had no idea existed. I didn't know that the competition was unfair, that the competitive nature of the music was cut-throat. Then when I had the chance to experience that, Canibus had to create another level. Rip the Jacker is like a foot side of Jack the Ripper".

Produced by Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind, the album frequently samples golden age hip hop tracks. Canibus is characterized for his "deep vocabulary, scientific concepts, battle rhymes and descriptive imagery" throughout the album.
Rip the Jacker received rave reviews from the majority of critics, who noted that Williams' largely scientific lyrics and distinctive, rough delivery was finally matched by equally fine production, as Canibus had a history of working with badly selected producers. Unlike Mic Club, Rip the Jacker charted on both Billboard's R&B/hip-hop charts and the Billboard 200, peaking at #34 and #197, respectively, although commercially, it retained the tendency to sell few copies.

Critics highlighted various aspects of Rip the Jacker's originality, both in terms of beats and lyrics; Stoupe had employed a large number of samples from often obscure compositions, while Canibus himself undertook a variety of topics from various perspectives. Of note was the inclusion of "Poet Laureate II", a song exceeding seven minutes in length and lacking a chorus, with several changes of beat throughout; the track was frequently singled out as one of the strongest in Canibus' career and the album as a whole convinced listeners and the industry alike that the rapper hadn't lost his potential.

The Horsemen Project (2003)
[with The HRSMN]
Label: Think Differently Music/Proverbs Music Inc.
Purchase

Picture
The Horsemen Project is the first full-length album released by the hip hop supergroup The HRSMN through Think Differently Music/Proverbs Music Inc. in September 2003.  The album itself is rare as only a limited number of copies were produced. In January 2012, Ras Kass left the group.

2000 B.C. (2000) featured the first collaboration between Canibus and Kurupt, Ras Kass and Killah Priest, a rap supergroup collectively known as The HRSMN (referring to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse), on the track "Horsementality". Though following 2000 B.C.'s release it had been announced that the group would be releasing an album, these plans never materialized, with only an EP of outtakes from 2001 entitled The Horsemen Project released by Killah Priest's management in 2003. Since 2000, however, the members of the group have worked together on various songs and rumors of a full-length HRSMN album are rampant to this day and include speculation about collaborations with Pharoahe Monch, Common and Rakim, among others.

Mind Control (2005)
Label: Gladiator Music and Tommy Boy Records
Purchase

Picture
Mind Control, is the sixth studio album by Canibus, released on June 21, 2005 through Gladiator Music and Tommy Boy Records. The album was originally recorded in 2001 before C True Hollywood Stories and was released to complete a contractual agreement Canibus had with Gladiator Music. Mark Sparks produced the album, which features guest appearances from Kurupt and Pakman.

Before the album's release, AllHipHop.com reported that the album would contain material on Canibus' experiences in the U.S. Army.  However, the album contained tracks that most Canibus fans had already heard. "33 3's", "Canibus Man", and "Last Laugh" were leaked in 2001. "Atlanta", "Gybaotc", "Stupid Producers", and "Nobody" were released on his unofficial mixtape My Name Is Nobody (2003), and "Not 4 Play" was released as "Scrolls" on The Horsemen Project (2003). The rest of the album contains three unreleased songs: "Mind Control", "In the Rain", and "Talk the Talk". Mind Control was recorded in 2001 before C True Hollywood Stories (2001) and contractually came out by chance in 2005, pushing back the release of his 2005 album, Hip-Hop for Sale. The album was released on Gladiator Music, a label that Canibus formed in 2001 with Ricky Lee, the executive producer of his second album, 2000 B.C..

Hip-Hop for $ale (2005)
Label: Mic Club Music/Babygrande Records/Koch
Purchase

Picture
Hip-Hop for $ale is the seventh studio album by rapper Canibus, released on November 1, 2005 through his own label Mic Club Music in conjunction with Babygrande Records and Koch Entertainment. The album was panned by critics, who dismissed it as yet another failed attempt to gain mainstream recognition, considering it as Canibus’s worst album.  The album was originally produced entirely by Nottz, but other up-and-coming producers were included on the project as well, such as Jeff Wheeler, Jay Swift, and Black Milk. The reason other producers were included was because in December 2004, over half of the completed material was leaked in the mixtape, The Vitruvian Man, causing tension between Canibus and Nottz. In an interview with SOHH, Nottz revealed he would no longer be working with him, saying Canibus leaked the material, blaming it on his manager Louis Lombard III.  The record, which was originally slated to be released on May 10, 2005, was pushed back so Canibus could work on new material for the album. Because Nottz had cut ties with him, Canibus had to reach out to other producers.

For Whom the Beat Tolls (2007)
Label: Mic Club Music
Purchase

Picture
For Whom the Beat Tolls (a play on the Ernest Hemingway novel 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', which itself is drawn from "Meditation XVII" of Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, a series of essays by metaphysical poet John Donne) is the eighth studio album by rapper Canibus, released through Mic Club Music on May 29, 2007 in the United States and June 5 worldwide. It features the new "Poet Laureate Infinity" concept, which involves mixing 200 bar layers with corresponding ones in order to create various subject matter, rhymes and overall sound. The album leaked on the Internet on June 4, 2007. According to Canibus' DJ, Puerto Roc, the album has sold 60,000 copies as of October 2007.

When the record was originally announced in March, there was only one confirmed track – the third installment in Canibus' "Poet Laureate" series, "Poet Laureate Infinity". The track has 1,000 bars, in the form of five 200 bar verses, and is layered in such a way that "when you mix it and spread it throughout five channels, [you have the ability] to mix the track differently every time". On April 8, 2007, the track was uploaded, by Canibus himself, to a website where the listener could mix the track differently on a digital mixing board. The website is now down, but the fansite Canibus-Central.com provided a backup.

For Whom the Beat Tolls was originally set for release in May 2007, but was pushed back one month, and a released on June 12, 2007 (though it wasn't distributed by Universal as previously reported). The album has 16 tracks and includes contributions from Killah Priest and Vinnie Paz, among others, and featured two personally made mixes of the "Poet Laureate Infinity" track ("Poet Laureate Infinity v003" and "Poet Laureate Infinity v004").

Following the release of For Whom the Beat Tolls, Canibus went on a sporadic tour in the U.S. to promote the record. In August 2007, Canibus made an announcement on his Myspace page that he had cut ties with his business partner Louis Lombard: "To my friends, family and fans, Just wanted everybody to know I no longer do business with Louis Lombard, III & Mic Club Music.

For Whom The Beat Tolls received generally positive reviews from critics.  Steve Juon of RapReviews.com called it "the latest and greatest Canibus album", noting how "from the eerie Indian backdrop of 'The Fusion Centre' to the futuristic booming beats of 'The Goetia' to the epic musical groove of 'Secrets Among Cosmonauts' Canibus keeps doing what he does best over and over again: spitting raw energy in his raps over stellar tracks."

Playda's Reviews gave the album 8.5 out of 10, saying "Canibus sounds more focused than ever, bringing much-needed lyrical heat to a year lacking just that" and calling For Whom The Beat Tolls "easily one of the best albums of 2007 so far (not to mention being Canibus' best effort since Rip the Jacker, if it wasn't obvious enough) and definitely worth your money"

Lyrical Law is the eleventh studio album by Canibus released on July 1, 2011 independently as physical copies that were shipped from Canibus's own website - CanibusCatalogue.com. Buyers of the album had a choice of the LP in a sleeve, jewel case, or as an LP Deluxe Package. The Lyrical Law Package included and autographed Lyrical Law CD in jewel case and two bonus disks. The fist bonus disk features artists from Spitboss on completely new material or remixes of Melatonin Magik as was intended for the original Lyrical Law album. The third and final disk is an album titled Lyrical Warfare recorded in 1993 as The Heralds of Extreme Metaphors (T.H.E.M.) with Webb between Atlanta and Washington D.C.. Just after CanibusCatalogue.comwas up and running, fans were able to pre-order the Lyrical Law LP and could also read a letter from Canibus and view the tracklisting for the album as well. This tracklisting featured "Lullaby of Champions" (which was pulled because of the beat), "HRSHU Attack", and "U R A Pig" (which were pulled due to squashing of Royce Da 5"9' beef) and were going to be on the physical copy of Lyrical Law.
